Tyees New Name for A’s
[Victoria Colonist, Feb. 24, 1952]
The Victoria Athletics are no more.
Business manager Reg Patterson announced last night that club officials have fallen in line with a suggestion for a change of name and that the city’s Western International Baseball League entry would be known this season as the Victoria Tyees.
Tyee is an Indian word which means big and is used to describe big salmon which have made B.C. fishing world-famous. Club officials and fans hope the change in name will herald a big season for the Island club.
There was no definite player news other than that Portland will attempt to purchase the contract of Art Thrasher from Sacramento and that an effort will be made to interest Keith Simon in attending the Portland training camp. Simon, a hard-hitting pitcher who once played in the W.I.L. with Bremerton, would presumably join the Tyees if he fails to make it with the Beavers.
