KENNEWICK [Victoria Colonist, June 29]—Once again getting excellent, rout-going pitching, Victoria Tyees showed signs of snapping out of their slump at Tri-City last night although forced to accept a split in a doubleheader with the Braves.
Starting for the first time in weeks, rookie righthander Bill Wisneski came up with his first complete game but ran into a tartar in Tri-City manager Charlie Gassaway and lost a 2-1 heartbreaker.
BEN GETS 12TH
Hard throwing Ben Lorino squared the count in the nine-inning finale, hurling his fifth shutout of the season and scoring his 12th victory in 16 decisions as he held the Braves to six hits while his teammates made 11 hits good for six runs.
The series concludes today with another doubleheader and the Tyees return home tomorrow for a four-game series with Wenatchee, starting with a holiday doubleheader Tuesday. Cal McIrvin and Jehosie Heard are almost certain mound choices for today’s game.
Wisneski, who is indicating strongly that he will be of more help in the katter part of the season, just failed to hold a 1-0 lead and it took some fine clutch defensive play by the Braves to keep him from earning his sixth win instead of being tagged with his second loss.
Don Pries, returning to the line-up, batted in Victoria’s run in the third and John Kovenz squared it with a four-inning home run. The winning run was fashioned after two were out as Wisneski momentarily lost control. Nick Pesut singled and went to third on a single by Joe Scalise. Wisneski hit Bob Rittenberg to load the bags and forced in Pesut by walking Lopes.
Granny Gladstone led the Tyee attack on Ralph Romero, one of the Tri-City aces, in the second game. He had two singles and a double and drove in three runs—his 56th, 57th and 58th of the season.
Manager Cec Garriott shook up his batting order. Jim Clarke led off with pries hitting second and Bob Moniz hitting third in Garriott’s old spot. The slumping Garriott relegated himself to eighth spot, just ahead of the pitcher.

KENNEWICK [Tri-City Herald, June 29]—The Tri-City Braves split a Western International League double header at Sanders Field last night.
Tri-City won the first 2-1 behind the four-hit pitching of Manager Charlie Gassaway. However, the Tyees snapped back strong in the nightcap for a 6-0 shutout.
The two teams will play another doubleheader tonight starting at 7 p.m.
A bases-loaded walk issued by Victoria's pitcher Phil Wisneski in the sixth inning gave Tri-City the winning run in last night's seven inning opener.
Manager Charlie Gassaway hung up his first season's victory by handcuffing the Tyees on four hits. Victoria jumped out in front on the scoreboard when they picked up their first and only run in the third inning.
Center fielder John Kovenz made it a 1-1 ball game when he hammered the ball over the right field fence.
In the bottom of the sixth, with two out, Nick Pesut slammed a single into center; Joe Scalise followed with another to right and Pesut to the delight of the fans made it two third.
Bob Rittenberg was hit in the left shoulder to load the bases. That brought up the shortstop, Don Lopes, who worked Wisneski the full count, when Lopes drew the fourth ball he forced in Pesut with what proved to be the winning run.
Gassaway struck out three and walked two. Victoria got their lone run on three singles in the third. They got their only other hit of the game, a single, in the second.
Ben Lorino rung up his twelfth victory of the season when he blanked the Braves in a six-hit effort in the second game. Ralph Romero, now the victim of a defeat in his last three starts, was charged with the loss. The righthanded ace has nine victories.
Victoria won the game earlier as the first inning when they scored three runs on five hits. They picked up one more in the third and two in tie fourth.
Fritz Brenner was honored in ceremonies between the doubleheader when he was named as the most loyal fan of the Tri-City Braves. Brenner received a watch. The design carried out the baseball idea. Other gifts were also presented to the fans.
