SPOKANE, July 5 — The Spokane Indians moved up two game on the league-leading Victoria Tyees Saturday with a 10-5, 10-1 sweep of a Western International League baseball doubleheader.
Though they committed five errors to Victoria's four, the Indians outhit the Tyees 11-7 in the first game and never were headed. They took a five-run lead in the fourth inning, added another run in the seventh.
Victoria came within one run of the Indians in the top of the eighth, but the Indians came back in that frame with four more runs.
Bill Sheets led the Spokane attack with three singles in four trips to the plate.
Frank Chase, who pitched the first six innings for Spokane, was the winner, though he needed relief help from Bob Roberts in the seventh. Victoria starter Bill Wisneski, the loser.

SPOKANE [Victoria Colonist, July 6]—Spokane Indians apparently know just what they were doing when they decided to play two games yesterday instead of today, as listed in the W.I.L. schedule.
Victoria Tyees, playing their ninth game since Tuesday—five days—ran into expected pitching difficulties and went down twice, 10-5 and 10-1, as the Indians pummelled weary Victoria moundsmen.
The double setback cut the Tyees’ lead over Spokane to six and a half games and to eight over Vancouver Capilanos, who won at Lewiston.
Bill Wisneski, who started a game Wednesday and relieved briefly Thursday, started the first game. He was relieved by Carl Gunnarson, pitching for the third night in a row, who was relieved by Walt Towns, Garriott’s secret weapon, after going out for a pinch-hitter. Ben Lorino, who pitched 14 innings inn two games Wednesday, had to stay in and take it in the finale.
The Tyees battled hard in the first game after dropping behind, 5-0. Helped by Spokane errors and timely use of seven base hits, they got up to 5-4 and 6-5 before a four-run eighth inning took them out of it.
Garriott, playing for the big inning in the Victoria half of the eighth, made the wrong uses to lose all chance. Trailing, 6-4, the Tyees started a rally when Chuck Abernathy got on through an error on John Treece singled. None was out and with Gunnarson pitching fine relief, Garriott could have called for a bunt and played for the tie or, as he did, go for the big inning.
He decided on the latter course and it almost—but not quite—paid off. McIrvin struck out in a pinch-hitting role. Clark whiffed but Moniz kept things alive with a run-producing single. Then Garriott, who could have made his strategy look good, saw it fail when his long fly was caught against the fence.
The Indians then scored four after two were out against Towns.
Lorino, seeking his 14th win against heavy odds, just didn’t have it and took his fifth loss instead. He was hit hard and not helped at all by three errors.

LEWISTON, Idaho, July 5 — Vancouver drubbed Lewiston 14-8 Saturday night in a loosely-played Western International League baseball game that saw a total of of 29 hits and seven errors.
The win gave Vancouver a 2-1 lead in the five-game series.
Jim Wert led the Capilanos' hitting as they touched three Lewiston hitters for 15 hits, with a double and a single that sent home four runs.
After scoring twice in the first game and four times in the third, Vancouver iced the game in the fourth with four more tallies on two walks and singles by Bud Isham, Len Tran, Wert, Ed Locke and Ray Tran.
Bill Whyte, who started at the mound for the Caps, got credit for the win. He was replaced in he third by Van Fletcher. Lewiston starter Joe Nicholas was charged with the loss.

WENATCHEE, July 5—The Wenatchee Chiefs snapped the Tri-City Braves' winning streak at five games by defeating them 7-5 in the ninth inning of a Western International League game on Saturday night.
Bill Kostenbader, signed recently by playing manager Charlie Gassaway, was credited with the loss.
Tri-City right fielder Joe Scalise led the batting parade with two for three. In the seventh inning he was nicked by a ball pitched by Charlie Oubre. Instead of proceeding to first he ran out and started pummeling Oubre, apparently feeling the pitch was deliberately aimed at him. He never got to first—the umpires thumbed him to the showers and Frank Mataya went to first for Scalise.
The Braves led the game going into the bottom of the ninth. With one away Wenatchee's Rip Robinett drew a walk. Dick Adams, batting for Oubre, hit the ball far into the right field and drove Robinett to third. Tom Moore went in the game as a pinch runner for Adams.
The next batter struck out but a clean hit by Ben Guererro drove in both runners.
Tri-City opened scoring with three runs in the first inning on two walks, two singles and an error.
The game lasted nearly three hours.

YAKIMA, July 5—The Salem Senators stopped the win streak of the Yakima Bears at eight straight Saturday night, taking a Western International League baseball game from the Bears, 5-2.
The Yakimans looked as if they werp about to make it nine in a row when they scored two runs in the second inning Sal Taormina singled and scored on Len Noren's double. Noren came home on John Albini's single.
Salem got its first run in the fourth. Bill White doubled, advanced to third on a walk and scored on a fielders choice.
The Senators clinched the game in the sixth with three more tallies, aided by Yakima's lone error. In that inning Bill Spaeter singled and Jim Deyo and Dick Bartle beat out infield hits to load the bases. Art Thrasher lined a drive to short right field and Jerry Zuvela caught it but in his haste to throw, dropped the ball for an error that let Spaeter home.
